Latin Network Scholarships Target Art Students

New London - The Latin Network for the Visual Arts has created a scholarship fund and will award $1,000 grants beginning in 2011.
The fund will be managed by the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut. Scholarships will be for graduating high school seniors in New London County who plan to study art at an accredited institution. Preference will be given to students with ancestral roots in countries where Romance languages are spoken. Scholarship recipients will also be selected based on recommendations from school personnel, academic ability, extracurricular activities and demonstrated financial need. Students can apply through the Community Foundation (www.cfsect.org), by April 1, 2011.
The Latin Network for the Visual Arts is an active, not-for-profit organization founded in 2003. It has sponsored five international art exhibitions, bringing art from all over the Latin world and showcasing it in southeastern Connecticut. |

Catalog
The Latin Views 2010 catalog, designed by Sharon Griffis and featuring full-color reproductions of the works of the selected artists, will be available at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition and by request after the exhibition closes. Supplies are limited; be sure to get yours early! |

 This year LNVA’s fifth international exhibit, Latin Views 2010, “La Quinta Bienal”, will showcase an extraordinary diversity of fine art created by Latin artists. The exhibit embodies a cross section of contemporary art rather than a specific theme, balancing different medias ranging from painting and sculpture to photography and installations. By visiting this exhibit, the viewer will have the unique opportunity to encounter locally an international diversity of expression. |

| Artists Announced For Latin Views 2010 Biennial Exhibit |
Latin Network for the Visual Arts (LNVA) announced the list of artists participating in the upcoming Latin Views 2010 Biennial exhibit.
A jury composed of Gregory Bowerman, Mimi Daumy, Guido Garaycochea, Julia Pavone and Patricia Shippee selected fifty-seven artists, out of eighty applicants who answered LNVA's international call to artists. One juror noted, "The Latin Views 2010 artists selected for this year's exhibition reflect a great variety of expressions. The exhibit does not favor any one medium or aesthetic style, but rather it assembles a wide range of individual expressions, personal histories and random encounters that speak to a sense of openness and community."
The Biennial exhibit is the Latin Network for the Visual Arts’ panoramic survey of contemporary art created by Latin artists. It includes a blend of well-established artists together with emerging artists from all over the Latin world. Their works range from photography, painting, sculpture and drawing. The exhibit will be on display at the Alexey von Schlippe Gallery of Art at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point Campus from September 10th through October 22nd. The gallery hours are Wed. - Sun. 12-4 pm |

 This unique biennial exhibition began by bringing together people from the arts to act as jurors. This year included 5 people: 3 artists/curators, one art appraiser/ collector, and one art collector. Viewing the vast number of artists, mediums and styles, (over 400 entries) was an exhilarating and difficult task. We were very excited about the level of the art, the innovative works and mediums, and the number of countries these artists represented. Our task was to cull the works down to 90 pieces or less, which was a difficult thing to do. As one art patron excitedly exclaimed, this exhibition will allow the people of this region and beyond to "take a trip around the world viewing art without ever leaving southeastern Connecticut!" |

This is the fifth biennial exhibition of Latin art, this year called "La Quinta Bienal", by the Latin Network of Visual Arts, a program established by the indefatigable Mimi and Gaston Daumy and their stalwart band of volunteers. The Daumys created the organization to highlight the contemporary work of artists from any Latin nation and a parallel community education program that addresses the art. All the exhibitions are juried and this year attracted the work of 85 artists submitting 407 works from 21 countries. It is the largest submission with the greatest breadth yet.

 There is something to the old adage "If it isn't broken don't fix it!" That saying captures some of the elements of the Latin Views biennial exhibits. The venue of the Alexey von Schlippe Gallery of Art in the Branford Mansion at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus is a showcase for this "Quinta Bienal" the fifth biennial Latin Views 2010. The music by Val Ramos and his brother Jose in the Nuevo Flamenco style has been with the LNVA since its inception in 2003. The beautiful guitar music is a wonderful accompaniment to the international art being shown at the gallery. Gourmet Galley has provided wonderful Latin-appropriate appetizers for the last four biennials and Cask 'n Keg will again provide the refreshments. This is a must-attend event, great locale, music, food and libations - but most of all the chance to interact intimately with international artists from nineteen different countries - what could be better? |

 The Art Is Here! Quality exceeds all expectation, from the intrinsic power of life-size sculpture to delicate colors and detail too subtle even for digital cameras. You’ll just have to come see the real thing! Traditional media are well represented, as is work from textiles, marquetry, and mysterious materials. At least twenty artists from all over the world will attend the opening, including one who received special encouragement from her homeland: the Mexican government, through the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA), a department of International Cultural affairs, awarded the artist a stipend to attend this exhibit.
